Making decisions

| February 9, 2015

Part of moving on is making the decision to do so. Being indecisive about your life can leave you feeling stuck and unhappy. Being indecisive is different from being open to what arises – it is more a state of a fear, possibly inability to commit, or maybe lacking motivation.

Here are a few quotes to help get you out of indecisiveness. + A TED video below entitled “Why we make bad decisions.”

“Fear stifles our thinking and actions. It creates indecisiveness that results in stagnation. I have known talented people who procrastinate indefinitely rather than risk failure. Lost opportunities cause erosion of confidence, and the downward spiral begins.” ~ Charles Stanley

Well! That’s pretty self-explanatory. No obscure language to be fathomed here. Fear>indecisiveness>stagnation. It is possible to get out of a stagnant and difficult time of life. Sometimes life will naturally force you out of your stagnant funk.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~ Mark Twain

This reminds me that sometimes it is better to do something – anything! – rather than be paralyzed by indecision. You might make mistakes or encounter difficulties if you sail from your safe harbour, but you will be a better, happier person for it in the end if you don’t give in to paralytic fear. It is important to remember that sailing from your safe harbour can be anything that takes you out of the familiar. It could be taking up a new instrument. It could be saying “hi” to, or smiling at a stranger. It could just be not looking at your smart phone for half a day!

“Not making a decision is actually a decision. It’s the decision to stay the same.” ~ Lysa TerKeurst

This reinforces the idea that not making a decision will make keep you in stagnancy, and you will stay the same. Of course in a way it is impossible to stay the same. We grow older. Our minds and thoughts change. Life happens. But if you are unhappy and you have a choice about it why choose to stay the same.
