Songs About Moving on in Life

Whether you know it or not, you’ve probably used music therapy often in your life. According to the American Music Therapy Association, music therapy is the clinical and deliberate use of music to accomplish specific healing goals. This could be planned therapy, in the case of using a trained music therapist, or unplanned. Most people have used unplanned musical therapy techniques, especially when searching for songs about moving on in life. Moving on from any situation, especially relationships, is difficult. If you can locate something that speaks to you and helps to motivate you, often you can get the impetus you need to get started.

“Since U Been Gone” – Kelly Clarkson

“Since you been gone (since you been gone)
I can breathe for the first time
I’m so moving on
Yeah, yeah
Thanks to you (thanks to you)
Now I get, I get what I want”
“Since U Been Gone,” from Kelly Clarkson’s album Breakaway in 2004, is a catchy, uptempo song. Even with lyrics about a relationship that has died, she’s moving on and moving up. She’s not staying in the situation that has kept her down for so long. This is one of those songs about moving on in life that builds to a crescendo.

“Down to My Last Teardrop” by Tanya Tucker

“I don’t care a hoot or what you’re doin’
Ain’t gonna be no more boohooin’
Baby, this time I swear it’s the truth
I ain’t gonna cry no more for you”
Tanya Tucker is another girl who’s done with sitting and moping. She’s got plans — big plans — and she’s not sitting around waiting for anyone to call. From her 1991 album What Do I Do with Me, “Down to My Last Teardrop” is upbeat as well. It’s tough to listen to the song without getting up and moving.

“Let’s Say Goodbye Like We Said Hello” written and sung by Ernest Tubb

“I’ll remember you and the love we knew
The love of yesterday
Let’s say goodbye like we said hello
In a friendly kind of way”
This one’s an oldie but also timeless. Ernest Tubb, a singer and songwriter active from 1936 through the early 1980s, recorded this one. The lyrics in this song are beautiful, as is the sentiment. While a lot of modern songs have a touch of bitterness, “Let’s Say Goodbye Like We Said Hello” is open-hearted and friendly. It’s a song about moving on, but with positivity and with love.

“I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor

“Oh no, not I. I will survivesong about moving on in life by gloria gaynor
Oh as long as I know how to love
I know I’ll stay alive
I’ve got all my life to live
I’ve got all my love to give and I’ll survive
I will survive,
I will survive!”
When you’re looking for songs about moving on in life, few are as powerfully moving as “I Will Survive.” Number six on the Billboard singles charts for 1979 but it reached number one, this song has become an anthem for everyone from spurned lovers to advocates of all types of causes. It has been covered dozens of times from other disco performers to rock bands. Surrounded by the powerful lyrics, it’s easier to believe that you, like the singer, can survive.

Finding songs about moving on in life isn’t an exact science. It takes finding that combination of music and lyrics that speaks the most to you. If it helps you to get up and physically move, that’s even better.
